I like your thoughts concerning socially responsible investing.

I have been following SRI for about forty years and believe that when we invest in a company, or many companies in the case of a mutual fund, we share in the responsibility for the activities of those companies as well as participate in the outcomes of their corporate activities. So, anyone valuing their personal or spiritual growth has to take these things into account when investing.

Also, if everyone invests according to their personal values, then, since so many of our core values are alike — and are supportive of higher ideals — that in the long run, only companies employing these higher values will truly prosper. And there is real evidence of this now.

I advocate, teach, and write on the subject of personal values based investing — and have a popular website that has unique information which might interest you. It includes the latest global socially responsible investing news and research. My site is at http://investingforthesoul.com

    Best wishes, Ron Robins

Another excellent energy educational piece, particularly making the connection between socially responsible investing and energy/carbon issues. The article brings home the message of the complexity and interaction of energy, carbon and financial gain to investors and energy users.

I like the references (many) that support and provide documentation to the message, often current issues that are bandied about are presented in rather strong written unsupported and short sound bite rhetoric. While the electronic information world is substantial, good ,and sometimes factual, the supporting references provide the credibility often missing from the electronic information medium.

Look forward to more of this quality information and supporting resources.

I have invested in a SRI mutual fund for a decade and I thought of it mostly in terms of negative screens, with an increasing emphasis on positive screens. However, I hadn’t considered the energy efficiency point of view and I really appreciate your bringing that to our attention. Keep up the good work!

As a follow-up to this post, there is a great NYTimes article from a few days ago discussing the number of new shareholder resolutions related to environmental and energy practices across a wide array of companies over the past year:

Shareholders Offer a Spat of Climate and Environmental Resolutions, The New York Times, 2/18/11 http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/19/business/energy-environment/19proxy.html?_r=1&ref=energy-environment
