Our Motivation

Carbon Lighthouse was founded in recognition that our society is not taking the decisive steps needed to protect us from the negative consequences of our energy-based economy. Energy is critical to modern life; it also all too often harms the planet. From air and water pollution to wars over resources, our procurement and use of traditional energy sources threatens our sustainability. Climate change in particular is already having very real impacts on our planet, and they will only accelerate over the years to come unless we take immediate and concrete actions to reduce greenhouse gas pollution.

Mining Energy in the Built Environment

Our founders were committed to finding a pragmatic solution to significantly reduce greenhouse gas pollution in the United States within the decade. It needed to:

• Be rapidly deployable
• Be scalable to a diverse set of locations and markets
• Have a large potential environmental impact, and
• Be profitably self-sustaining without government regulation or subsidies

Using these criteria, energy use in commercial and industrial buildings stood out as the best opportunity. These sectors represent nearly 50% of US energy use and efficiency offers both environmental and financial benefits. However, despite decades of work in both the public and private sectors to promote energy efficiency, the vast majority of American buildings are using up to 50% more energy than necessary to maintain comfort and safety.

Our team took this as a personal challenge to build a company that will realize the promise of energy efficiency to mitigate climate change.
